Hi Scott,

The world is very divided indeed when it comes to HDR images, but controversy is good :) I've not taken any photos in the last couple of months so maybe I'll have a fresh perspective on how I do my post processing when I get back into it.

I'm seeing a lot of such images around the web and, to be blunt, they aren't what i consider to be good high dynamic range photos. They look highly stylized or just oversaturated. I'm looking to wind up with vivid, realistic color and detail in all parts of the image, not make them look like The Wizard of Oz.

Many buses in Malta have been replaced and lots of effort is being done so that old one are at least fixed properly. As well said in the article, in some cases the service is really not professional.

I am wondering what other software you are using for post-processing. Photoshop of course, also Topaz, Imagenomic, Lucis? I love most of your photographs, except those that are oversaturated, blasting with color that look unreal. Anyway, this is just my personal opinion.

I'm glad I followed you on twitter, you have some awesome shots. I don't like a lot of tonemapped images, but yours are nice. I still see a little bit of the haloing around the boat but it's not bad.

I'm working hard on using the techniques you teach (without much success yet!) and I've really enjoyed a lot of your work but... this is exactly the kind of HDR image that turns me off. The background details are garishly over saturated and the boat details against the sky have an "embossed" look. That is the halo effect you warn against, is it not? I like this image but feel it would be better if processed more traditionally in this case. Just my 2¢! Please keep up your great site and sharing.

Hey Stephen,
Yup, I use Photomatix and merge 3 exposures. I can't remember if I selected the CA correction option (I believe I did after seeing the effects).

This shot (http://jamiepang.smugmug.com/photos/754424715_cFtnT-L.jpg) was OK but the HDR pano is terrible especially where the branches overlaid with the sky.

You can see the HDR pano (16 frames) here (http://jamiepang.smugmug.com/photos/754424137_wzYTi-L.jpg) . And my friends' movement made the results a bit awkward too.

Looking fwd to Pt3 then!

Hi Jamie, Part 3 should be up this weekend :) I take it you use Photomatix? Do you use one image or a series of images to make an HDR. Photomatix has built in CA reduction but will only use it if you give it a series of images and not just the one.

Nice shot! The colors are great. I remember walking this same waterfront briefly a couple years ago and thinking it was an interesting spot.

Also, I just recently used Noiseware for the first time as well and I agree, it's fantastic.

Glad you're interested Glenn :)

As for nitpicking I welcome it all! I had considered adding an "all other things remaining equal" sentence when introducing EV, in the spirit of no one else picking up on this it's now been added :)

Part 3 should be up in the first week of the new year - there's a little matter of celebrations first:)

*really* keen for part 3 of this tutorial now, as I've been using the HDR plugin for Aperture to do my HDR and the results aren't nearly as impressive as yours. And I've been holding off buying Photoshop because I really want CS5 :/

I may have to give in though.

And just to nit-pick a little on your explanation of EV. "If you increase your ISO, you increase the EV"; assuming you're on manual mode and all other values stay the same. If you're on shutter or aperture priority, the camera will usually adjust the other values to try and keep the exposure the same.
