Posing Girls In Notre Dame

I have plenty of shots from Paris, so here’s another from Notre Dame Cathedral! For whatever reason the two girls in the bottom right of the shot seem more than willing to be in the picture, so I gladly obliged!

Late Night Coffee in Paris

Here’s an oldie: I must have been running when I took this shot – it’s so blurry! The blue – yellow effect isn’t something I planned during processing but the dominance of just the two colors quite apealls to me.

Seeing the Paris skyline from the Tour Montparnasse

On my second trip to Paris in October I was made aware of the Tour Montparnasse: a giant of a building on top of which you can go outside and view a wonderful 360 degree panoramic of Paris. The Tour Montparnasse also happens to be home of Europe’s fastest elevator – rocketing you up from the ground to the 56^th floor in 38 seconds!

You may notice a rather large structure in today’s photo; it is of course the Eiffel Tower, and just like the last time I was in Paris, I wasn’t able to go up to the top of it since it was once again closed for maintenance! I’m beginning to believe that I’ll never make it inside.

This trip was the first where I used my Nikon 50mm Nifty Fifty lens, the fact that it’s a prime lens and so doesn’t zoom took quite a bit of getting used to; I was constantly stepping back to try and get everything in my shots!

Still Alive

I’ve just noticed that it’s been over 2 months since I last posted anything!! I’m coming within the last two or three months of my PhD and it’s really taking over all my time, leaving me with very little oppertunity to do anything else

I was back in Paris recently as part of my work so I’m gonna run through some pictures I took while over there – the weather was much better than the last time I was there in January, although I only brought an effective 75mm prime lens (Nifty 50 with a DX sensor) so it was hard getting far enough away from subjects to compose anything properly!

If I don’t post again before the the end of the month Happy New Year!

Napoleon’s Window To The World

Napoleon’s Tomb in Paris is filled with all sorts of shiny thingys – this window caught my eye pretty sharpish while I was meandering through glass cabinets and narrow corridors. No tripod was used here of course – Parisians seems to have some sort of aversion towards them, indoors at least

Don’t Look Up!

Here’s a quick shot of the Eiffel Tower from a rather vertigo inducing angle – I have to run off now though and help a friend move about 6ft from one room to another now!

I’m still slowly upoading some photos (including this one ) to a printing site, I’m still standing by my deadline of Wednesday or Thursday…

Drinking Coffee At The Brasserie

Guess where you would find a cafe with the words ‘Brasserie’ and ‘Notre Dame’ in the name? Paris of course! I never stopped at this cafe though, I was just strolling by it one evening. This shot was handheld also, so all thing considering it turned out much to my liking!

Also I’ve started uploading images to a printing site finally so I’ll post the relevant link once all that is ready, probably Wednesday or Thursday

Dodging Traffic On The Champs Élysées

The Champs Élysées in Paris is home to one of the busiest and most dangerous roundabouts in the world, so when you’re standing in the middle of the road and hundreds of angry French cars are whizzing by in the dark you’d better be sure you’re in a safe spot! Fortuantly I was, although the friends I was with were none too pleased of the constant hold ups!

The Grand Chandelier Of Notre Dame

I got back from Malta yesterday after sitting on a plane for four hours next to a perspirant-efficient and circumferentially-challenged individual, but the trip away was fantastic – lots of homoerotic bonding with a certain flatmate.

Oogles of photos to sift through but for today I found this shot of inside Notre Dame that I rather liked – I’ve begun using Photoshop now rather than GIMP as I’m finding Photoshop more intuitive with it’s many many features.

Another Last Minute Picture

Here’s another quickie – recently I’ve been missing out on my usual routine of setting up a day’s post in the morning and instead I’m rushing it at the very end of the day. I was at a comedy night in college so that’s my excuse for today. The general topic up for discussion were the inner workings of canine excrement, and the evolutionary limitations of said canine disposing of said excrement, followed swiftly by masturbatory activities of the masturbation kind. Mmmm.

Oh yeah I think this was taken in Paris.

Ghosts In The Subway

I’ve intentionally overdone it with the tonemapping here to keep in line with the ghostly theme of today’s image. This was taken minutes after that douchebag on top of the Arc de Triomphe informed me of the idiot rule that tripods were not allowed when taking shot from up there!

The two in the background that are strangely not moving are two friends posing for the shot

A Stroll Down Champs Elysees

I’m always amazed at the stupid stares people can give photographers for no apparent reason. This shot looks innocent enough but one guy was staring at me as if I had just run over his only child. I’ve found an easy way to deal with people like this – just point the camera at them, this particular guy scurried off pretty quick.

If you have the mean I highly recommend getting over here to Champs Elysees – there’s a confectionery shop somewhere on the left hand path as you head towards the Arc de Triomphe that makes the most amazing violet flavored (is violet a flavor?) muffins / buns / heavens. I really have to go back there just for them.

This shot isn’t tone mapped, it’s just a long exposure. I did fiddle around with it a little in GIMP since GIMP save files much smaller than in Photoshop I find. The EXIF data will follow shortly.

A French Latte

I can’t remember who, but someone on Twitter specifically asked for a picture of a french coffee, or cup maybe? and so I am delighted to finally oblige and present this exceedingly simple shot of a coffee one of my comrades ordered in a stupidly expensive cafe in Paris. I’ll have a rummage through Twitter later and try to identify exactly who was so eager! I hate coffee by the way – I hate the taste, the smell, the price the ad infinitum…

I really need to get back to shooting multiple exposures rather than relying on just one NEF file, college is keeping me from doing anything except, well college. I think I’m gonna try and see if I can make usually ordinary household items look more interesting over my next few posts.

Grandiose Carvings In Napoleon’s Tomb

I want my house to have walls like this. Except the carvings will be of me.

Stepping into the tomb of Napoleon was like stepping into the past – the architecture and craft of the walls and statues are just not seen in today’s buildings. The crème de la crème of the visit was surely going to be the actual resting place of Napoleon I – a huge sarcophagus towering above us in height, with two fat workers repairing some tiles beside it, so much for the illusion of grandeur…

The Eiffel Tower Under A Blown Out Sky

I had super high hopes when going to Paris that the weather would be great throughout – especially on the day that I would visit the Eiffel Tower. However it was miserable! I have no idea what the sky’s problem is here, but I do like the clouds that you actually can see. Did I mention I didn’t even go up to the top of the tower?! – there was maintenance happening on that single day!

Sacre Coeur In The Morning

This was the view I had every morning while stayng in Paris – Sacre Coeur is apparently the highest part of Paris, and gives a great view of most of the city, although you cannot see the Eiffel Tower from it, which is kind of unusual.

If you do head up this direction might I advise you do not stop for any of the ‘enthusiastic’ guys that try to sell you any old shit they have on them – it still annoys me today
